WP-K1-LEL : Surge Protector for WAGO Railway Signalling Terminals
Surge protection for existing WAGO signalling terminal installations.
Railway signalling equipment depends on electrical circuits that must operate reliably.
Lightning-induced surges entering through connected conductors can damage electrical components and interrupt signalling operations.
For maintenance teams, the problem is often practical: how do you replace aging surge protection without changing the entire terminal arrangement?

The Solution: Sankosha WP-K1-LEL
The Sankosha WP-K1-LEL is a surge protective device for WAGO terminal arrangements used in railway signalling installations.
The product is illustrated as a compact module fitted into a WAGO terminal assembly, with connection paths identified as A, B and protective earth (PE).
It is specified for 110 VAC nominal operation, with a maximum operating voltage of 240 VAC.
The supplied electrical ratings include:
- 10 kA maximum discharge current
- 800 V protection level
- Protection paths identified as L–PE and N–PE
ABO’s installation material includes terminal arrangements used in single-track and double-track railway signalling systems.
Replacing Aging Surge Protection

Surge protective devices can deteriorate after prolonged service and repeated surge exposure.
PT ABO Madalex Indonesia’s installation guide recommends replacing older SPDs after approximately five years in service.
This provides a practical starting point for maintenance planning, especially where the installed equipment has not been reviewed for several years.
However, replacement should be based on the condition of the device, the manufacturer’s instructions, and the signalling system’s maintenance requirements.
When replacing an existing unit, the first step is confirming the exact terminal arrangement and replacement part.
The supplied documentation does not identify a complete list of compatible WAGO part numbers or existing SPD models that can be replaced directly.

Understanding the Ratings
110 VAC Nominal Voltage
WP-K1-LEL is intended for a nominal 110 VAC circuit.
The 240 VAC maximum operating voltage describes the device’s specified continuous voltage limit. It does not mean every application up to 240 VAC is automatically suitable.
10 kA Maximum Discharge Current
The catalogue provides an Imax value of 10 kA but does not identify the associated discharge-current waveform.
That detail should be confirmed before comparing this rating with other IEC-rated SPDs.
800 V Protection Level
The catalogue gives an 800 V protection level for the L–PE and N–PE paths, using a 10/200 µs waveform.
The document does not identify the complete applied test conditions or a corresponding test current.
It also does not establish an L–N protection rating.
For detailed technical comparison, these values should be checked against the manufacturer’s complete test documentation.

Railway Signalling Installation Reference
ABO’s installation guide, dated 16 April 2017, contains diagrams and application photographs associated with:
Area Stasiun Jeruklegi — PT KAI SINTEL DAOP-5
The material shows the WP-K1-LEL terminal arrangement and identifies a replacement position within existing signalling equipment.
It also includes illustrations labelled for single-track and double-track applications.
These drawings provide a useful starting point for comparing existing equipment with the proposed replacement.
They do not, however, identify every compatible terminal series or verify interchangeability with all installed SPD models.
Check These Four Items Before Replacement
Before ordering WP-K1-LEL, confirm:
- WAGO terminal series and part number. The physical connection arrangement must match the installed terminal.
- Circuit operating voltage. Confirm the nominal voltage and maximum voltage expected during operation.
- Existing SPD model. Identify the device currently installed and whether WP-K1-LEL is an approved replacement.
- Protective earth connection. Verify the PE connection and the required surge protection paths.
These checks help maintenance teams avoid ordering a device that matches the application description but not the actual terminal configuration.
What About Ethernet Connections in the Same Cabinet?
A signalling cabinet may contain separate communication circuits that need their own surge protection.
For Gigabit Ethernet connections, see the Sankosha LAN-1000IS-2 Gigabit Surge Protector.
LAN-1000IS-2 is intended for Ethernet applications. It is not a substitute for the WP-K1-LEL on 110 VAC signalling circuits.

Replacing an Existing WAGO Terminal SPD?
Send PT ABO Madalex Indonesia the WAGO terminal part number, operating voltage, and existing SPD model.
Include a photograph of the installed terminal and SPD if available.
We’ll review the information and help determine whether WP-K1-LEL is an appropriate replacement.
